What is No-Shave November?
No-Shave November and “Movember” are web-based organizations that raise awareness and funds for men’s health and cancer prevention. The concept is simple: skip the razor for an entire month and donate the money you’d typically spend on shaving. Participants are also encouraged to set up donation pages and share with their friends and family for support. Men and women are both encouraged to participate in these events - so no worries if you can't grow a beard!
Where does the money go?
This year, the money raised through No Shave November’s donation pages will go to one of three organizations:
- Prevent Cancer Foundation
- Fight Colorectal Cancer
- St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
Alternatively, you can choose to donate via the Movember Foundation, which donates their funds to:
- Prostate cancer research and awareness
- Testicular cancer research and awareness
- Men’s Health and Wellness campaigns
- Mental Health and Suicide Prevention
The Movember Foundation is a charity which aims to raise awareness for select health issues faced by men including: testicular cancer, prostate cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention. They hope to increase awareness by asking men around the world to grow a moustache during the month of November. The foundation also encourages everyone to “Move for Movember” by increasing their physical activity throughout the month whether it be from walking, running, cycling, swimming, rowing, or other aerobic exercise.
No-Shave November primarily utilizes social media to raise awareness about their cause. Their official hashtag is #LetItGrow, but their website also has several posters and flyers that participants can print out and share, as well as various merchandise.
